ITEMS OF INTEREST. NOTES FROM PUKEKOHE EAST CHILDREN'S FANCY DRESS 13ALL The Pukekohe East children's annual fancy dress bait was held in the hall last Friday when a very large attendance of parents and friends assembled to see the children trip Hie light fantastic. The young- folk had been very well taught and their ability to execute the steps of the various dances, including a folk dance, showed great credit to the training of the teachers, Mr L. .1. Burke • and. .Miss Maekie. Miss Maekie , played the music for I lie children and at 10 o'clock when (lie adults took the floor Hie (diildren partook of a sumptuous supper including fruit-salad, and ice cream, served by the "wives of the school committee and lady helpers Mr J. W. Robinson, chairman, presented the swimming certificates to the children who were fortunate enough to win them and also the calf club certificates from the Agricultural- Department, won by them last year.- .-

Mr and Mrs Warren and Mr Hart played excellent music for the grown lips, who kept going until a late hour. This was the most successful function to have taken place in the district for a long- time. NOTES FROM MERCER SCHOOLBOYS AT RUGBY The Mercer schoolboys’ Rugby team added to its line of successes on Sunday by defeating a local junior team by nine points to three in a game in which the school boys availed themselves of every opportunity and held the advantage throughout. Mr J. Pinga was referee. After the game. Mr H. Montgomery provided both teams with afternoon tea. Basketball Affairs

The Mercer basketball A team had an easy win when they defeated Mangalawhiri by a wide margin, in a friendly game on the Mercer ground. The Mangatawhiri team did not enter the competition till very late in the season, and it is thought that their lack of experience had a lot to do with their defeat. The Mercer team intend visiting Te Aroha later in the season to play the Te Aroha representatives. Basketball fixtures for the Mercer club for Saturday are as follows: —A grade v. Tuakau, at Tuakau; B grade v Buckland. at Buokland. Personal Mr and Mrs J. Power of Mercer have returned from a holiday in Auckland. TE KOHAN'CA NEWS SOCIAL CHIB FUNCTION The inelemonl weather last Wednesday evening was responsible for Hi ere being only a small attendance at the monthly function of the Kohanga social tdub. The guest of the evening was Mr A. B. Fordyoe of Tuakau, who related some very interesting and amusing war exrkp'iinees. Mr Fordyi.e received a hearty vole of thanks. The roll-call, ‘A Funny Stcry,” was well re- eived The community singing praved popular and w“-s led by Mr A McGowan, while Mrs E. Bond played the pianoforte accompaniment. Football Club Meets A special meeting ol‘ Te Kohanga Football Club was held in the local hall last Thursday to discuss matters relating to the recently formed Rugby sub-union at Oncwhero.
