Bombay Celebrates Its 73rd Anniversary.

PICNIC AND SPORTS. WELL-ATTENDED GATHERING. BILKEY SHIELD TO PAPARATA. Years roll By but the dauntless .spirit and early labours of the pioneers the Bombay district have not been allowed to be erased from memory. Saturday marked the 73rd anniversary •of the foundation of the Bombay settlement and the occasion was fittingly • commemorated by an outstandingly .successful picnic and sports gathering held on the Bombay recreation ground. The-attendance was over 350, among those present being many former residents of the district. Entries were mot as large as in past years mainly owing to counter attractions and a •change of status this year from professional to amateur.

Mr A. G. A. Sexton, M.P., extended a welcome to those present and referred to the progress of the district. He paid tribute to the work and zeal of the officials and congratulated the people of the district on their heritage and the worthy manner in which they •did honour to their pioneer forefathers.

The success of the gathering reflects great credit upon the president -of the Bombay anniversary picnic and amateur sports club, Mr G. J. Whitmore, who, with the assistance of the .secretary, Mr- P. G. Fahey, and a co--operative band of officials, ably directed proceedings. Entries were remarkably good in the Highland dancing. The standard in the open events was of a high class while entrants in the local events also performed with creditable distinction. "The judges were Miss B. M. Kerr and Mr H. MacDonald, both of Auckland. Mr Pi. Sheddon was the piper. The school children’s events, which • .attracted large'entries, were under the Bombay and Mr F. Procter of PapaTata. DANCE IN THE EVENING. The dance held in the Bombay hall ir. the evening was attended by visitors from the surrounding districts, the floor being crowded. Ernie Butters’ orchestra supplied the music, while Mr S. Lowrie acted as master of ceremonies. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss J. Tuohey and Mr L. Hood. The winners of a spot waltz were Miss C. •is and Mr R. Smith. Supper arrangements were under the supervision of Mrs J. Harrison, Mrs J. Lawrence and Mrs J. Fraser.
