Tragic Drowning in the Waikato River,

FATALITY AT MERCER. SMALL BOY’S DEATH. BROTHER’S EFFORTS FAIL. A sad drowning tragedy occurred : r n the Waikato river at Mercer at 7.30 o’clock on Monday evening, a five-year-old boy, Douglas Tetzlaff, son of Mr and Mrs Balfour Tetzlaff, being the victim.

j At the inquest held yesterday by the | district coroner, Mr C. K. Lawrie, J.P., evidence was given that Douglas and his brother Mervyn, aged 10 years, were fishing from the Roose Shipping Company’s wharf on the western side of the river. When Mervyn caught a fish, Douglas, when turning; to run to tell his parents, who live about 66 yards from the wharf, tripped and fell into the water which was about 8 feet deep. Mervyn called for help but receiving no response, took a rowing boat in an endeavour to rescue his brother who by this time had disappeared. Dragging operations were commenced without delay and the body was found at 8.30 o'clock in a deep hole eblow the wharf. Artificial respiration was tried without success. The coroner returned a verdict of accidental drowning.
