Successful Show Held at Paerata.

I BY WOMEN’S DIVISION.

j GOOD ENTRIES RECEIVED.

: FLOWERS AND COOKERY. ! i i Many members from other branches were present at the flower show held on Wednesday by the Paerata branch of the women’s division. With one or two exceptions, all the classes were well contested. The hall presented a picturesque appearance with the tables of flowers at the side and across the front of the stage. The stage looked particularly pleasing, it being Ihe setting of the entries for a bowl and a vase of flowers arranged for effect. The cookery section attracted large entries, especially the classes for plain scones and home-made bread. Some artistic work was displayed on the needlework table, the embroidered aprons being much admired, as also were the. entries for fancy knitting and novelties.

The show was officially opened by Mrs N. P. Adams (president of the Waitemata provincial executive), who congratulated members on the fine display of exhibits, mentioning in particular the cookery section. The judges were: Mr E. Allan (Buckland), flowers; Mrs Dreadon (Drury) and Mrs Bentley (Ramarama), cookery; and Mrs Appleby (Pukekohe), needlework. An amusing competition, guessing the names of flowers or vegetables by tickets pinned on one’s back, created

a friendly atmosphere and kept members occupied while the judging was in progress. This was won b'y Mrs Cronin. Another interesting competition for guessing the names of flowers by their smell —the petals were sealed in cloth bags—was won by Mrs John Schlaepfer. Two songs by Mrs A Clark and a recitation by Mrs D. Twidle were much appreciated. A dainty afternoon tea was served by branch members, after which prizes were presented by Mrs Adams.
