PAPAKURA v. MT. ROSKILL. The Papakura learn opened the season on Saturday with a match against Ml. Roskill on (he domain. The weather was ideal, the light good, the wicket had (fortunately the fast bowlers were not playing), and the outfield uncut. This affected the scoring of both sides and made ground fielding difficult. As it was the first game of ttie season it was not surprising that the fielding was far from good, and Papakura did not do itself justice in this important branch of the game. Several catches were missed and others that should have been chances, had the players been on their toes, went for runs. A feature at both innings was the high scoring of “Mr Sundries.”

As tiie season progresses it is onlj natural to suppose that play will improve. No boundaries were marked on the ground which meant that all scores were run—on one occasion Bcechey and Hammond ran a good six from a hefty hit to leg by the latter. Papakura's team included Kemp, who. after a couple of season’s spell, bowled very well to secure six wickets for 21 runs: and R. Hammond, whose year's rest appears to have benefited him as he and C. Beechey effectively stopped a “rot” in the local side's innings.

The Play. Winning the toss Mt. Roskill decided to bat. Their first two wickets fell with only three runs on the board. Thereafter a couple of good partnerships resulted in a total of lit* being notched when the last wicket fell. Booth (2k), and Moseley (2r>) were the principal scorers. On going in to hat Papakura were quickly in difficulties, Burgess, Kemp and B. Beechey contributing one run between them. Thereafter Hammond partnered his captain and these two batsmen showed that the bowling was by no means as deadly as it seemed. The partnership added about 50 before Beechey was howled by a ball that kept low and broke in. Rodgers followed and he and Hammond j were unbeaten at stumps with the score reading four for 02. Although the cross-wind helped the bowlers to

swing the ball in the \air it is difficult to account for the failure of the early batsmen —lack of practice must explain if. The match is in an interesting position and will be concluded next Saturday. Messrs Elliott and Wright were the umpires. Scores are:— MT. ROSKILL.—First Innings. A. Roy, 1.b.w., b. C.
