“There is Ony One Way to Get Money.”
“GOOD, HARD WORK.” ADVICE TO YOUNG THIEF. “There is only one way to get money and that is by good, hard work,” Mr .1. Patterson, J.P., addressed a young man who admitted in the Pukekohe Police Court yesterday that he stole a purse and £2 12s 8d in money from a workmate. The justices, Messrs F. Perkins and Patterson, suppressed his name. Constable C. Robb prosecuted. Evidence was given by defendant’s workmate that he left the money in a drawer in which he kept clothes. The money was there on the morning of September 3, but in the evening it had disappeared. “It seems to be a rather mean, contemptible thing to steal money from a workmate,” said Mr Perkins, who added: “Under the law you are liable to a sentence of six months’ hard labour.”
“You have never been in trouble before,” said Mr Patterson. “You are a young man, and it seems to be a poor way of starting out in life. . .
However, we are going to give you a chance to make good.”
He was convicted and fined £1 with ns Gd costs and ordered to make restitution.
