Franklin County Council Affairs.

MONTHLY MEETING. GENERAL BUSINESS. REQUEST BY UNEMPLOYED. The monthly meeting of the Franklin County Council took place on Wednesday, there being present: Mr J. N. Massey, M.P. (chairman), Crs. H. Wilcox, H. J. Flay, J. Dean, J. Henry, J. Matheson, A. R. T. Urquhart, C. Dickey, 11. P. Garland, W. C. Motion, J. F. McArthur (engineer), Alan P. Day (clerk) and W. T. Cheeseman (assistant clerk).

Mr H. 0. Mulholland, Paerata, wrote stating that a Pukekohe branch of the Franklin Unemployed Workers' Association had been formed, and requesting that any dealings with unemployed be done through the branch. —The clerk to acknowledge receipt of the advice.

Mr S. I. Crookes, Auckland, made an appeal for funds in order to save the engineering school of the Auckland University College.—No funds available.

Mr E. Westhead, Te Toro, requested that an extra five chains of metalling be undertaken, and pointed out that he had recently paid £26 5s toward work.—Deferred.

Mr W. H. Ross, Onehunga, intimated that he would contribute £lO or 40 cubic yards of scoria if the council would undertake surfacing work to his property.—Consideration was deferred. Mile Road Metalling. Mr A. Best and nine others, Bombay, asked that 18 chains of metal be laid in order to complete Mile road.— Cr. Flay and the engineer were authorised to have the work put in hand. Mr J. Turner, Ararimu, forwarded his approval to the council entering on his land and commencing the construction of the new Ararimu-Bombay road, on the understanding that fencing was not to be done until the road was op* ened for traffic.—Received.

Mr J. G. Reid, Ararimu, wrote pointing dut that culverts on the Me-Intosh-Jacobi road had not yet been attended to. —Deferred until the estimates are being considered. Mr E. Reid, Hunua, urged that terms be arrived at with Mr A. Sutton in order to provide a new access road instead of the present road through Mr Sutton’s. The Commissioner of Crown Lands offered to contribute £6l on behalf of Mr Sutton if the council would survey, legalise and open the new road, and close the existing road. —The terms were approved. The solicitor for Mr R. Reay, Hunua, claimed £25 for damage to property by a fire alleged to have been allowed to spread from Hunua road by unemployed workers. It was stated that nine chains of fencing had been damaged and a hawthorn hedge destroyed. —lt was decided to reply that as no previous notification had been given of the damage, alleged to have occurred on January 17 last, it had not been possible to make an inspection. The Public Works Department relative to the request for the council to legalise and fence a road to the native block at Whatapalca (Karaka), suggested that the owners might be prepared to give orders on their dairy cheques for portion of the cost. —It was decided to reply that funds should be provided by the Native Department, and that the proposal relative to dairy cheques was not favourable. Patumahoe Footpath. Mr R. S. Naylor, Patumahoe, requested that the footpath outside his premises be tar-sealed. —Cr. Henry to report to next meeting regarding the advisability of sealing works in the township.

Mr I. Barriball, Mauku, asked that he be given a definite promise as to the metalling of Bald hill toad. A reply is to be sent that a subsidy had been applied for, and if granted the work could be considered.

Mr D. McDonald, Pokeno, urged that approximately 10 chains of the road leading to the properties of Messrs T. Peacock and G. Little be put in order and metalled. He would spread the metal, which could be obtained for 6/6 a cubic yard, and fence the road.—Left to Gr. Dean and the engineer.

Mr A. J. Lowe, Waiuku, applied for permission to fence off a piece of road near McLarin’s beach in order to clear noxious weeds. —Granted under the usual conditions.

The surveyor for Mr G. C. Howie forwarded for approval a subdivisional plan of portion of an allotment in Waiau parish.—Approved.

The Waiuku Town Board forwarded a cheque for £2 8s 6d for the jubilee celebrations subsidy claimed and paid to the Waiuku school committee in error. —The board is to be thanked.

The engineer was asked to inspect a road in the Glenbrook district with the view to taking action to have noxious weeds cleared.

Authority was given for the cutting back of a bank at Aylward’s corner. Waipipi.

The engineer was authorised to proceed with the construction of the embankment at Hood’s landing, Otaua The council approved of repair work being undertaken on Craig’s road to Taurangaruru school and on Hamilton’s road.

The engineer was asked to have an area near Whangamaire stream bridge, Karaka, cleared of noxious weeds.
