Further Increase in Passenger Traffic.
TUAKAU STATION FIGURES.
GOODS TRAFFIC ALSO UP. A further increase in the passenger traffic from the Tuakau station has been recorded during the year which ended on March 31. The number has been increasing steadily, and the latest figures available indicate that the passengers carried totalled 21,591, as compared with 20,857 during the previous year—an increase of 734. Increases have also been recorded in the number of sheep railed from the station and in other goods despatched, while there has been a falling off in cattle and calves, due, no doubt, to fewer bobby calves and boner cattle being sent away by rail. haae also been increases in the inwards traffic. Details of traffic for jhe year are as follow, the figures for the previous year being given' in parentheses: — Outwards. —Sheep, 53,378 (48, 914); cattle and calves, 9,260 (10,308) ; other goods, 4,800 tons (4,697. tons). Inwards. —Sheep, 15,453 (13,802) , cattle and calves, 1,169 (964); other ■goods (merchandise, fertilisers and coal), 11,373 tons (10,305 tons).
The wool railed during the same period totalled 1,988 bales, compared with 2,197 bales for the preceding year. Owing the disappointing prices at the opening sales several of the large run-holders have held over rheir clips.
