Events in the Country Districts.

ITEMS OF INTEREST. PAPARATA NOTES. •. * I - - FUNCTION AT SCHOOL. The Paparata school was a scene of great activity on the occasion of the function to celebrate the closing of the school year. There was an exceptionally large attendance of children,- parents, and friends. The programme commenced with the following items by the children: Recitations, Fae Mcßae, Nancye Rudd and Lorna Hood; song, Joan Hace; trios, Lorna Hood, Desley Curley and Carolyn Bennett; chorus, “Lullaby Land,” by all the girls; unison singing, the pupils. At the conclusion of these items Father Christmas appeared in front of the gaily-decorated tree, which was heavily laden with presents for all the young folk. Each child received a gift from the tree, together with a bag of sweets and nuts. Having spent a lively half hour with the children, Santa Claus departed, and the concert programme continued.

Additional items given were: Songs, Mesdames Mace and Connell; duets, Mesdames Woods and Mcßae; recitations, Mesdames N. Stuart and Woods. A one-act play entitled, “The Bride,” was presented by the following: “Mrs Irving,” Mrs Cobbett; “the bride,” Miss Dodd; “Miss Judith Irving,” Mrs Woods; “Madam Grace” and “Miss Sparrow,” Mrs Connell; “the maid,” Mrs Mcßae. The brief period allotted. to community singing, with Mrs W. A. Peterson at the piano, was greatly' appreciated. Mr R. H. T. Newick, the local teacher who presided, commented favourably on the pupils* work for the year.. He also thanked the ladies responsible for organising and .making possible the Christmas treat for the children;, also Mr F. Perkins of Pukekohe, the Farmers’ Trading Company, Pukekohe, and Mr E. 0. Norrington of Bombay? who kindly donated sweets and nuts. A dainty supper was served, and dancing concluded the evening’s entertainment.
