Great South Road Reconstruction,
RUNCIMAN-BOMBAY SECTION,
MUCH WORK TO BE DONE
The reconstruction of the Runci-man-Bombay section-' of the Great South road is proceeding apace, but there is much work to be done before this section ol’ highway is even opened temporarily to through traffic. As reported on Wednesday, the sealng of the surface has been commenced on the Runciman end of the road and as far as the turnoff to Pukekohe East should be completed before Christmas. Just south of this corner the grade has Been improved considerably, rises having been cut down and hollows filled in. A great deal of work has to be done north of Ramarama as the new road will “bite” into one property for a considerable distance.
The gang is at present being confined to the filling a few chains south of the Ramarama store. A large concrete culvert is being constructed under the road in the hollow. From this spot southward for over a mile the new road will follow’ practically a straight line, A number of deviations were made to improve the alignment. The cutting down of the hill ’outside Mr A. J. Harris’ residence at Bombay and the construction of the filling across the flat entailed several weeks’ work, which, is now finished. The sharp rise and the corner have been dispensed with, the road following a new alignment, with an easy grade. It is stated that the road may be open for traffic during the holiday season. '
