Affairs of the Franklin Acclimatisation Club.

MEETING AT WAIUKU. CLOSING OF RIVER BASIN. i SALE OF GAME ILLEGAL. ! ! A general meeting of the Franklin Acclimatisation Club was held at Waiuku on Saturday evening, the president, Mr A. G. Potter, presiding over a fair attendance. Correspondence 'dealt with at the Pukekohe meeting was read and discussed, as also was the report presented by the secretary, Mr B. Naylor. The allocation of pheasants, as suggested by the Auckland committee, was left to the president, who was asked to obtain as many birds as possible. Mr .T. M. I-leise said delegates should bring under the notice of the council the suitability of the Franklin district for pheasants. He stated they should stress the fact that it was not entirely a dairying district, and there was a large stretch of country on which birds were thriving., The question of the licensing of all people carrying guns off their own properties was discussed, it being decided to forward a remit to the society favouring the suggestion; also, to urge the introduction of systematic ranging. It was decided to lodge an application to close the Waikato river basin for. a sanctuary. The area suggested was from the top end of Maioro bay across to Weta’s point, and including one . chain above high water mark on ithe Maioro side and the road on Port Waikato side, to the mouth of the river.

The subject of commercialisation of game was discussed. One member .stated he knew of instances where men were shooting for three months

and selling the birds. The club agreed to bring before the notice of the council the fact that game was being listed on the menus of licensed eating houses; that such practice was illegal and offenders to prosecution under section 16 of the act.
