Affairs of the Women’s Institute.

THE PUKEKOHE BRANCH. i DECEMBER MEETING HELD. | ADDRESS ON MEXICO. The December meeting of the Pukei kolie Women’s institute was held in the Oddfellows’ hall on Monday even-' ' ing. • There was a large attendance,, the president, Mrs G. G. Revell, presiding. Among those present were Mr W. Boyle, Consul for the United States, and Mrs Boyle, and several members of sister institutes. The branch decided to associate itself with the Federation’s proposal to make a suitable gift to Her Exceli lency Lady Bledisloe, prior to her departure for her home in England, i It was decided to enter for the Franklin A. and P. Society’s court competition to be held during the jubi- , lee show in February next. A parade of 14 members wearing old-time frocks—some of the costumes being certified as being up to 100 years old—created much amusement. They were a splendid variety and proved that the modern frock is decidedly more comfortable and hygienic compared with those worn by; our ancestors. A wonderful collection of antiques was displayed, the articles attracting , much interest. . :> ■ The monthly competition, cream ' puffs, was won by. Mrs Morrin, with , Mrs Revell in second place. 1 - ; j, The next meeting was fixed for' February, the competition being’something new from •something' old! ■ r Vocal items by Miss Gullliard Were thoroughly appreciated. ' td-t. ■ • .; At the conclusion of the routine business, Mr Boyle, Consul for the United States of America at Auckland, delivered an interesting and instructive address on Mexico; The speaker took his audience for a 1 tour o% this picturesque country famous- for" many things.including its bandits and' revolutions, and its beautiful historic edifices, its highly cultured aristocracy, its truly remarkable tablelands,

and its magnificent cathedrals and villas. “Mexicans are never in, a hurry —they are rather slow to move •in most things, the exceptions.- being a revolution and a Mexican in a , motor car,” said Mr Boyle amid laughter. The speaker said three of the, best years in his life were spent in this splendid country. Air Boyle was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for*, his interesting talk on the motion of Mrs. N. Booth. ' ■ Supper was served, the hostesses b,eing Mesdames H. Horne, E. J. Grotty and Miss Goodrick. A dance followed, the music being supplied by Mrs G. Bowden.

THE WAIUKU GROUP. MRS ANDERSON PRESIDENT. The annual meeting of the Waiukii group of the Women’s Institute, was held recently. All institutes of the. group were well represented. i On behalf of members Mrs Porter president of the Otaua Institute, congratulated Mrs McElwain on her election to., the executive committee of the Auckland. District Federation of the Women’s Institute, which body in turn had elected her as their treasurer. Expenses amounting to £5 8s 9d incurred an connection with the last group meeting were shared pro rata among the six institutes of the group. Anderson of Aka Aka, Was elected group president unopposed for the forthcoming year. A group committee of 12, two from each institute, was agreed upon and the following committee was elected: Mesdames Brake, Bright, Brownlee, Colbeck, Cooper, Hay, McCrystal, McElwain, Muir, Porter and MiSs Gairney The Aka Aka institute has yet to elect a. second representaitve.. g The next group meeting was fixed for.;September, 1935, and a.thrift table competition for the group’s silver challenge, vase was drawn up.

The retiring secretary was the *recipient of a beautiful box of handkerchiefs.

"A motion that all institutes of the group share pro rata., the travelling expenses of their representative on the Auckland Federation executive committee was carried unanimously.
