The Otahuhu team which leads in the competition met Papakura on Ihe local ground on Saturday and a drawn game resulted. The rain held off during play hut both the ground and the ball were greasy. The game was really a tussle between two good sets of forwards interspersed with occasional attempts al passing : by the backs. The hard play of the visitors gave them territorial advantages continuously but llie team failed to turn these io account. The game could have been won by either side from penalty kicks: Ihe visitors, however. had more chances in this direction than the home team. On the run of play Otahuhu was the more impressive. but over-eagerness and many infringements when in handy positions saved a defeat for Papakura. The Play. Otahuhu kicked off and play centred in the home twenty-five. It reached the rods' line several times but invariably free kicks to the defenders relieved. With the game m progress less than lon minutes a visitor was warned for rough play and a free, kick awarded Papakura. The visitors' half hack cut the defence to ribbons and it seemed as if I hero was nothing to prevent a try. However, lie kicked the hall which went dead and a likely chance was lost. Papakura now invaded Ihe visitors' half but Ihc full back was found reliable. Olahuhu returned to ihe altack but bail' time was called with play in the reds’ half. On resuming the game was even harder and fasler than before, and Olahuhu wore hammering on the Papakura line for quite a while. Forward passes and scrum infringements al Ihe critical limes saved (lie Papa-! kura line. Otahuhu had three pen- I alty kicks al Ihe goal bul each mis- i sod from easy angles. Then play was transferred to the visitors’ line, where j Papakura made strenuous efforts *o ! cross. A free to the attackers right j in front of the goal looked too easy to miss hut Ihe kirk went under the liar. Papakura kept up Ihe attack bul Ihe end came wilin alupbnltoie end came without a point being scored by oil her side.

THE THIRD OPEN. Tin 1 Papakura third open loom I ravelled |o the City imd despite poor playin.c conditions thoroughly enjoyed their game with Glenoro. Though

they returned with a fairly good beating (2 5—2). all the players were enthusiastic over their outing. They had a really good keen game and I hen were treated to a hot cup of tea. The Glenora club should be congratulated on their efforts on keeping the game clean and entertaining their visitors. The Papakura team is gradually improving and the coach advises that: they should give a good account of themselves next Saturday when they provide Ihe only game nl Prince Edward Park.

THIRD INTERIMEDBATES. The local third intermediate team played and defeated .Manukau on Prince lid ward Park by six points 'two unconverted tries) to nil. A large crowd assembled in spite of adverse weather conditions, and the game was spoiled through a drizzling rain falling during the whole of the. match. Manukau fully extended the local team and the fact, that with only five minu I os In go. there had been no score, indicates that the contest was fairly even. Papakura assumed the offensive and only a forward pass stopped them from scoring. Free kicks lo both sides and an unsuccessful shot id goal by Papakura followed. Play was up and down the field, mainly through penalty kicks and forward

rushes but with no decided advantage to either side. Half time was called and ended a poor exhibition ofe* football with no score. Watson got a good run in to put the reds on attack but the visitors forced. Ragged play followed until Watson opened up Ihe best movement of tlie game which ended in Hammond scoring near the posts. The easy shot hit the post. Play now livened up and Manukau tried hard to even the score. However. Pie red forwards came away nicety with ball at* toe and a serum ensued on Manukau’s line"* From this. Young crossed, Topliss failing lo convert and the whistle ended the game.
