TRAFFIC FEES.

EXEMPTION FOR FARMERS. BOARD DISAPPROVES. The question as to whether farmers who transported their own produce in, their own motor-lorries should be ex 7, empt from the payment of heavy traffic license fees, was brought under the notice of the Tuakau Town Board meeting on Tuesday evening. The Commissioner of Transport asked for an expression of opinion from the befard. His letter pointed out that to exempt farmers would cost local bodies £30,000, and probably other sections would ask for similar exemption. ~

The chairman, Mr W. J. Taylor, stated that from newspaper reports the majority of local bodies were opposing the scheme. The farmer with a truck would be escaping payment, whereas the one unable to afford a motor-lorry would not be. : Mr W. J. Deeble said the farmers were experiencing difficulty, and the board should endeavour to assist them.

j The chairman: The man who has i to hire a lorry for carting his goods l j will have to pay, but the farmer with a truck will not. ! Mr S. H. Crawford stated it would be a difficult matter to keep a check i on who were farmers and who were not. j Mr G. N. Asher was of the opinion j that many farmers would be rushing

Ito purchase trucks if the proposal I came into force. Further, carriers j would be the sufferers. I On the motion of the chairman, sec- ; onded by Mr J. J. Dromgool, it was resolved to oppose the scheme.
