j THE TUAKAU CLUB. I ; ANNUAL MEETING HELD. I The annual meeting oi' the Tuakau Bowling Club was held in the pavilion j on Friday evening, the president, Mr ' A. J. Maiden, presiding over a good at- ! tendance of members. i j Reporting on the past season, the j president stated it had been most sue- ' cesst'ul. Two members had been lost by resignation and 11 gained. The j ; next season would be commenced with ' | two members less. He expressed the j hope that the members would prevail on those who could and would play bowls to join the club. A greater [ ! sum than usual was spent last year in j topdressing the greens. j At the commencement of the season, he continued, croquet lawns had been i 1 laid down from the proceeds of the J queen carnival held a few years back, j Together with delegates, he had met the croquet club members, the latter club agreeing to pay £SO toward the J expenses of maintenance. It came as { a "bombshell" to him when the ladies j said the sum was too great. He had j gone into the accounts and submitted a list showing that £ll2 had been ex- ! pended. Eventually, the croquet club i agreed to pay £45. '

The usual home and home matches had been played and in these the club was fairly successful, the president went on to say. In a match against Pukekohe", the club registered a win, its opponents being formidable ones. The visit to Devonport proved most enjoyable, although fewer than usual made the trip. A rink from the club was successful in winning a tourney at Glevedon, the members playing good bowls. On behalf of the club, he extended his congratulations to the winners. In concluding, he thanked the committee and the secretary for their assistance during the year. The financial statement presented by the treasurer, Mr E. W. Fielder, indicated that the receipts totalled £174 5s 9d, leaving a credit balance of £lO 4s 9d. Assets totalled £350, and outstanding subscriptions amounted to £G 4s. He had been advised that the club was entitled to the 20 per cent reduction in interest on the mortgage. Mr J. H. Keith wrote thanking the club, together with other clubs, for electing him as the country clubs' representative on the Auckland Centre. He stated he would watch the interests of the clubs, and at the same time endeavour to do his best for bowling, and solicited the club's co-operation. It was his intention to take the first opportunity of visiting the club after the opening of the season and he conveyed his best wishes Tor the future.

The resignations of Mr D. 11. Madill, on account of health reasons, and Mr F. Hard, were accepted with regret. The Sheaf cup for the singles championship, won by Mr J. Pirret, was presented by the president. He congratulated Mr Pirret on his fine performance, remarking that his win was a popular one and he deserved the congratulations of the members he had played against. Mr Pirret replied stating that the games he had played were enjoyable ones. The president announced that the first-year players' competition had been won by Mr J. C. Ley after a keen contest, and he presented him with a trophy he had donated. In reply, Mr Ley said he had heard prior to joining the club that the older members gave no advice to the juniors but he had found that this was not the case. Officers Elected. Officers were elected as follow: Patron, Mr Dynes Fulton; president. Mr W. A. Smeed; vice-presidents, Messrs A. R. Stanton and J. Pirret; secretary. Mr G. Smeed: treasurer, Mr Ev. W. Fielder; auditor, Mr A. 11. Tapper: sole selector, Mr G. E. Finch; match committee, Messr-s J. Pirret, W. Glasgow and J. Fulton; committee, Messrs Maiden, J. G. Ley, Finch, J. Logan, F. C. Bagnall and IT. Chapman; green superintendent, Mr J. Pirret; deputy superintendent, Mr Ley; honorary solicitor, Mr G. Arrowsmith: delegate to Auckland Centre, Mr Maiden; country clubs' representative on the Auckland Centre, Mr J. H. Keith; delegates to the Northern Waikato Association, the president and Mr Maiden. It. was decided that the subscriptions remain the same as for last season, with a levy of 5/- for afternoon tea.

Reference was made by the newlyelected president to the first-year play- i ei'S' competition inaugurated last sea- j son by Mr Maiden and its success. He 1 offered to donate a trophy for the corn- j ing season, under the same conditions. { The question of payment by the I croquet club toward the expenses in ! connection with maintenance of greens was discussed at length, the committee being empowered to negotiate with the ladies and to enter into an agree- j ment.
