BEEF FIRMER.

ADVANCE OF £1 PER HEAD.

LAST THURSDAY’S PRICES, j

The outstanding feature at Messrs Alfred Buckland and Sons’ regular stock sale at Pukekohe on Thursday last was an advance of £1 per head in the value for prime fat steers, the top price being £8 12s fid. This was indeed very pleasing to farmers generally and it was accepted as an indication that the depression is beginning to pass, following on the firming of the overseas butter market. There was a fair yarding of dairy cattle, but the quality was not up to the usual standard for this time of the year. Late rates were realised for fat pigs of which there was an average yarding, while competition for store pigs was keen and very firm values ruled. Quotations are: —

Dairy cattle: Best dairy cows and heifers close to profit, £6 to £7 10s; others, £4 10s to £5 15s; backward, £2 10s to £3 15s.

Beef: Extra heavy prime steers, £8 to £8 12s 6d; lighter, £6 10s to £7 12s 6d; heavy prime cows and heifers, £5 10s to £6; lighter prime, £4 15s to £5 ss; good killable cows, £3 to £4; old and boner cows, 10s to 50s. Store cattle: Two to three-year-old store steers, £2 8s to £3 10s.

Pigs: Choppers, 30s to 38s; heavy baconers, 40s to 455; light and medium baconers, 32s to 395; heavy pork-

ers, 28s to 31s; light and medium porkers, 22s to 275; stores, large, 20s to 275; slips, 16s to 19s; best weatiers, 9s to 15s; smaller, 2s upwards; sows due to farrow, £1 12s 6d to £2 15s: serviceable boais, £1 to £2 ss.
