TRAP ON SOUTH ROAD.

MOTORISTS IN COURT. Breaches of the motor-vehicle regulations resulted in a large number of car, lorry and service car owners being prosecuted in the Pukekohe Court today by Inspector E. H. Barrett, of the Main Highways Board. In the majority of cases the offenders were timed over a half mile stretch on the Great South Road south of Mercer on December 15.

A. I-I. .T. Brakenbush, who was said to have travelled at 44 miles an hour and.met two cars, was fined 20s with 10s costs.

George Bremner, whose speed was 43 miles; F. Coppins, 47£; J. Dempster. 44; Muriel Hawke, 50; V. Hughes, 44; D. J. McGowan, 46; E. T. Scott, 43; R. L. Stewart, 45; were each fined 20s with costs ranging from 10s to 13s.

A. G. Grinter, whose counsel explained that he had a clear road although he had travelled at 43 miles was fined 10s with costs of 10s.

Service car owners whose vehicles exceeded- the regulation speeds and were fined 20s and 10s costs were: Campbell Motors, 39 miles; G. Edwards (three charges), 36£, 374, 37J. Fines of 30s and 10s costs were imposed on Newbys Motors Ltd. (two charges), 39 and 40 miles; T. Raffell. 40J. D. Holman, 41 miles; H. A. Johnson, 42; Northern Automobiles Ltd, 41, were each fined 40s and 10s costs.

For operating lorries at speeds of 974, 31 and 29 miles, Auckland-Wai-kato Transport was fined 30s and 10s costs in each case; W. J. Graham, 36 miles, 30s and 10s costs.

A conviction without a fine was recorded against R. Batson for operating a lorry at Pokeno with only one regulation number plate. The inspector said defendant had assured him he would obtain a new set.

On a charge of dangerous driving on the Great South Road, Pokeno, an elderly woman was fined 20s with 10s costs. She was stated to have applied her brakes suddenly, the car skidding 164 feet through a gate, barbed wire fence and coming to a standstill on a lawn. W. A. Peterson and Sons admitted carrying three tons on a lorry when their license provided for only two and a half tons. Since the offence they had taken out a license for the heavier weight. A fine of 20s with 10s costs was Imposed.

K. McCardle, the owner, and V/haua Terika, the driver of an unregistered lorry were fined 50s and 10s costs and 20s and 10s respectively. Counsel pointed out that the owner had written to the post office for number plates but as stocks were out a pair had to be obtained from Auckland. In the meantime the lorry was used collecting cream.
