OBITUARY.

MRS J. B. BROWN.

50 YEARS IN SOUTH AUCKLAND

By the death on Sunday last of Mrs Katie Jane Brown, wife of Mr J. B. Brown, another link with the early history of the South Auckland district has been removed.

Born in Essex, 76 years ago, Mrs Brown came to New Zealand with her parents, the late Mr and Mrs George Rust, 73 years ago. Mr Bust developed the mission farm at Kohimarama in Bishop Selwyn's time. In 1881 Mr and Mrs Brown were married and they resided for 13 years in Auckland. Later they removed to Tuakau, Onewhero, and Pukekohe, where they have resided for many years. Mrs Brown was a resident of the South Auckland district for over half a century, and during that time she made the acquaintance of a wide circle of friends, all of whom held her in the. highest esteem, and who join in extending to Mr Brown and family their heartfelt sympathy in their irreparable loss.

On September 17 of last year, Mr and Mrs Brown celebrated their golden wedding. Mrs Brown always took a keen and practical interest in the affairs of the Church of England, particularly in St. Andrew's church, Pukekohe.

Mrs Brown is survived by Mr Brown and 37 descendants, including two sons—Mr J. B. Brown (Frankton), Mr M. G. Brown (Waiau Pa) —five daughters, Mrs F. T. Brown (Ohura), Mrs IT. W. Driver (Clevedon), Mrs J. T. Young (Mangatangi), Mrs G. Lyons (Mangatawhiri Valley) and Miss N.'.K. Brown (Pukekohe) —29 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Mrs Brown's surviving sisters are: Mrs E. L. Brown, Ellerslie, and Miss E. L. Rust. Melbourne. The funeral took olace at the Pukekohe cemetery yesterday and was of a private nature. Ah impressive service was conducted at St. Andrews' church by the vicar, the Bev. J. P. Cowie.

The pall bearers were: Mr F. H. rown (brother-in-law), Mr G. Lyons (son-in-law), Mr M. G. Brown, a son, and Mr R. Brown (grandson). Among those present was the Rev. F. B. Dobson, of Manurewa, formerly vicar of Pukekohe, a very old friend of the family.
