PAPAKURA COURT.
TO-DAY'S SITTING. BEFORE MR F. 11. LEVIEN, S.M. The regular sitting of the Papaliura Court was held to-day, Mr F. H. Levien, S.M., presiding. For not holding a driver's license, Chas. Black was fined 20s and costs. Joseph Zambucka for employing Chas. Black without seeing he had a license was fined 20s and 10s costs. The magistrate added that the onus was on the employers to see their employees held licenses.
The Main Highways Traffic Inspector, Mr E. H. Barrett, prosecuted.
Frederick Jones, traffic inspector, proceeded against G. H. Melville for carrying a load greater than that allowed under the regulations. His lorry was loaded with pine wood and he held a class B instead of a Glass D license. His load was given as 3 tons 12 cwt. A B class license allowed only 3 tons, a difference in fees of £1 9s 9d. Defendant was fined 50s and 10s costs.
For riding a motor cycle (with his arms folded) down the Takanini straight and through the Mahia speed trap, over the bridge and up the straight at 28 miles an hour. Vivinn S. Peterson was fined 20s and costs 10s. Defendant's excuse was he had just taken up a slack of 4in in his chain and was trying it out to see if he had fitted the wheel alright, as he knew if the machine did not go straight, the wheel had not been set true. The magistrate did not "swallow" this rather novel excuse. Defendant asked for time to pay as lie had no money on him. The magistrate allowed 14 days to pay. John P. McCall, for driving at a speed calculated to be dangerous to the public, at Mahia, was fined 10s and costs 10s. Defendant pleaded guilty and in mitigation of the offence said the time was "4.15 and lie had to catch a vehicular ferry for Birkenhead at five. He was going up the hill at the lime, and he had accelerated to pass a lorry. He did not deny the offence.
The magistrate: "Well it would only have taken another five minutes to have gone by Devonport." Defendant: T quite admit it is my funeral. "Yes," said Mr Levien "Your funeral, bul their wedding." (Laughter). Frederick G. Parker pleaded guilty to a change of travelling at 45 miles an hour at Papatoetoe. His speed under the regulations was 27 miles. The case was an adjourned one from last court day, when defendant pleaded not guilty, but now said he would pl'.'ad guilty as he had got confused with the date. He was fined 50s and costs 10s.
Buokerton Fisher, for travelling at, 4F> miles per hour between Wiri and Papatoetoe on Novemher 15, was fined -'iOs and eosts. Traffic Inspector Jones said defendant negotiated the two worst bends near Auckland at this speed, namely Wiri where the speed limit was 1 5 miles an hour.
