PAPAKURA'S VICTORY

A very fine exhibition of the League code was given between the fourth graders —Newmarket and Papakura—on the Railway Reserve, Papakura, on Saturday. The local team has been steadily improving, and gave the City team a great tussle for supremacy. On the day the result. SOUTH AUCKLAND DEFEATED.
PAPAKURA TOO GOOD
For the first time, a Papakura team was seen at Carlaw Park on Saturday. Quite a large number of supporters travelled to the City to see the Papakura boys in action. Knowing the reputation of South Auckland boys it was with mingled feelings they saw their favourites line out. As the Papakura boys took the field, it caused much comment among the spectators as to their neat appearance. The team would compare favourably with any of their older rivals. There was apparently very little to choose from with regards to their respective weights. The teams were: — Papakura (red) : James, Ross, I. Wilson, Quigley, Ashby, Hammond, G. Wilson. Clarke, Hill, A. Johnston, Flay, Francis, Osborne. Reserves: Smith and Kemp. Ruki was not available. South Auckland (blue and black)': C. Dunstan, Braun, Baker, Spencer, Bell, Kasoof, Evans, Evans, Lyndon, B. McConncll, McTear, J. Taylor, J. Spencer. Reserves: O'Brien, Hensilwood.
South Auckland won the loss and Ivan Wilson kicked off into a glaring sun. The reds advanced with sparkling open play. South were penalised and W. Francis had a fruitless shot at goal. The South cleared. When a nice passing rush by South was moving. Ivan Wilson intercepted, but knocked on and lost a golden opportunity. The reds were all out and raided enemy territory. Francis was prominent, and from a sortie Quigley almost scored. South found relief by a free kick. The reds were too eager. S. James regained the lost ground with a fine kick. In a rush the reds kicked a rolling ball which went just 100 far. From the drop out, first Hill, and then Francis improved for Clarke to fly through and down-Punstan under the posts. The South cleared but Francis, with a jinky run. changed his direction, and Soutli bad a torrid time to keep Papakura out. In an exchange of -kicks the South won as .lames kicked out on the full. Quigley. Hill and Clarke, brought the spectators to their toes, but South found touch in • their 25. The ball was only in play when the reds fanned out and Ross knocked the comer flag as In' flew over. A touch in was Ihe decision. In the second stanza the South appeared to rally and the reds were sorely tried, but kept their line intact. With play all over the field it was anyone's game and neither side seemed to be able to finalise their movements. In a great scramble J. Clarke obtained possession from the ruck to open the account for Papakura. W. Francis just missed. 1 Papakura 3 ; South 0 j The reds came again but I. It was now. apparent South did not relish the proposition the newest recruits to the League game were giving them. At last South really woke up and in a flash were almost over, good tackling saving the day. Not to be denied they raided Papakura's country and from a scramble in the corner Evans scored for South.
