LOCAL & GENERAL.

Bridge Party. A bridge evening, arranged by the St. Andrew's Ladies' Guild, -was held in the Cottage tearooms last week and proved enjoyable and successful. Eight tables were occupied and the prize went to Mrs H. Curd. Very Heavy Frost. A particularly heavy frost was experienced in Pukekohe and surrounding districts this morning. The whole countryside was covered with a white mantle. The thermometer at the Pukekohe Technical High School registered 22 degrees of frost, which must almost constitute a record for this district.^"To Pukekohe." The Pukekohe Chamber of Commerce decided on Thursday evening to ask the Auckland Automobile Association to erect a sign post with the words, "To Auckland via Pukekohe," emblazoned thereon, at the junction of the Pukekohc-Bombay and the Bombay deviation roads. It was felt thai many motorists passed along the deviation road who might visit Pukekohe, if they were aware that they could continue their journey to the City without having' to retrace their "steps."

Claim for Wages,

A claim for £lO, the balance of wages alleged to be due to him at the rate of £1 a week, was made in the Pukekohe Court on 'Thursday before Mr F. 11. Levien, S.M., by T. A. Blackmore (Mr J. M. Heise), against his former employer, J. J. Blake (Mr M. R. Grierson). The defence admitted that £4 2s 6d was owing, but maintained that the balance had been paid to plaintiff in cash and clothes supplied at council's request.. After hearing evidence the Magistrate gave judgment for plaintiff for £4 2s Gd and costs. Borough Representative Wanted. The question of having a representative of the Pukekohe Borough Council on the Chamber of Commerce, was raised at Thursday's meeting by Mr M. S. Campbell, who pointed out that if this were agreed to, the chamber would he following the precedent created by the Auckland chamber, which body had made provision for representatives of corporate bodies being appointed to ils number. He considered that if. this lead was followed in Pukekohe it would be in the best interests of the town. He moved that the.borough council he invited to appoint a representative to the chamber. Mr C. Cooper, who seconded the proposal, considered it a wise step and would he, in the best interests, because several questions of interest to. both bodies often came forward for discussion. The motion was carried unanimously.

Lively Interest!

A somewhat extraordinary situation arose at a meeting held at Meanee, Napier, when Mr W. E. Barnard, M.P., gave an address on the subje'et of the Earthquake Act, says the "Daily Telegraph." When the time arrived for the meeting to commence the hall was empty, except for the speaker, a newspaperman, one lady, and four men, and despite the repeated requests of Mr Barnard not one of those present would act as chairman for the occasion. Eventually Mr Barnard commenced his address without a chairman, but a few moments later a further listener arrived and consented to occupy the chair. A further space of time was occupied in rounding ,- up Meanee residents in order to hear the. .address, and eventually Mr Barnard to an audience of 14. Evidently Hawke's Bay people have had sufficient practical experience of earthquakes to kill academic interest in earthquake Acts.
