THE SALE OF MEAT.
FARMERS' WRONG IMPRESSION. REQUIREMENTS OF THE ACT. • It is generally believed by farmers in country districts that the Slaughtering Act gives them power to kill stock and sell the meat without hav T ing a registered slaughterhouse. This is not correct as under the Slaughtering Act a bona fide farmer may kill one head of cattle and five head of other stock per week This only applies to farmers who business it is to rear and fatten stock; it does not apply to dealers. Stock must be slaughtered under sanitary conditions and a record kept of all meat sold. Such meat or mutton cannot be sold or bartered inside a borough or town district or within three miles Of the boundaries of such borough or town district unless such meat or mutton is killed in a registered slaughterhouse.
The requirements of the Health Act also provide for certain conditions in the preparation, storing, and.handling of meat for delivery and sale. This information is given for the benefit of anyone who, unaware of the provisions qf the act, might be committing a breach thereof.
