OBITUARY.
iIIRS J. LUKE. AN OLD RESIDENT. The death occurred last week of Mrs Jane Luke, of Clevedon, one of the pioneers of the colony. Born on July 22, 1844, .Mrs Luke left Scotland with her husband, -Mr Win. Luke, when ■2O years of age. on the ship Helenslea. Mr and Mrs Luke took up land in 1865 on the road between Bombay and Pokeno. Some years later tlicy disposed of their farm and moved to Auckland. About: 1890 they came to Clevedon and again took up farming until Mr Luke died about fifteen years ago. Mrs Luke has since lived with her children, principally with Mrs G. 0. Munro. Mrs Luke was of an attractive character and endeared herself to a large circle of friends. She was a staunch member of the Presbyterian church and readily gave her assistance 1o many good causes. She retained her faculties up to the last and enjoyed good health considering her years. She was on a visit to her daughter, Mrs C. W. Stephens, when she was taken ill and passed away on Wednesday after only two days' illness. Her two daughters, Mrs C. 0. Munro
j and Mrs C. W. Stephens, and one son, ■ Mr J. Luke, a member of the Manu- ; kau County Council, live in Clevedon: j a son, Mr Henry Luke lives in Auckland ! and the other, Mr H. D. Luke, at Patea.
! Another daughter, Mrs Gallagher, died i six years ago.
I The interment took place at the I Symonds Street cemetery and was ati tended by a great number of friends, i and some beautiful wreaths and other I flora devices were laid on the grave.
