AN EVER-GROWING DEMAND. Motor vehicle taxation by the individual States continued its upward trend in U.S.A. last year, and increased nearly three times as much as mdtor vehicle registrations. At the same time the average vehicle tax throughout the United States increased by 13 per cent, over the previous year. The total increase in registrations was 8.6 per cent.: the increase in the total amount of special taxes (exclusive of personal property taxes) was 22.8' per cent. '

The average per vehicle taj r for the whole of the United States was 28.56 dollars against 25.24 dollars in 1928. The per vehicle tax has increased three times since 1919, when it was 8.55 dollars. Special taxes collected from car-owners last year reached 767,011,595 dollars, against 624,325,670 the previous year, an increase of 142,685,925 dollars.

Revenue from petrol taxation increased by 32 per cent last year. The total yield was 422,216,641 dollars against 319,906,417 in 1928.
