BOROUGH AFFAIRS.
BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETS. BUSINESS TRANSACTED. The monthly meeting of the Pukekolie Borough Council was held on Monday evening, there being present: The Mayor, Mr John Itoutly, Crs. G. T. Parvin, P. A. Miller, P. J. Morrow, R. Fulton, G. H. Armstrong, J. P. Rae, Mr S. J. Clews (foreman). Apologies for absence were received from Crs. A. F. Brown and J. Bell- ’ house. Prior to the commencement of busi- | ness the Mayor extended a welcome to Cr. Miller, and expressed the hope that he would prove a useful member. The Public Works Department advised that the Main Highways Board ; could not grant a larger subsidy than 1 £1 for £1 toward the improvement to the Pukekohe to Glenmurray Main highway.—lt was stated that applica- ' tion had been made for a subsidy of £2 for £1 on the highway f-om the' railway overhead bridge to lh-3 bor- ' ough boundary.—The communication was received. , Mr W. V. Brown, Albert Street, made lormal application for a reduction in rates. —Referred to the finance committee for consideration.
The A rain Highways Board in reply ' to the council’s intimation that a two- ' third subsidy for general maintenance ' and the erection of bridges was in- 1 adequate, advised that it could not tali? ' any further action as it considered the 1 subsidy a liberal one.—-The matter was [ referred to- the Mayor to further com- ' municale with the board. j Mr A. .T. Lewis, Helvetia Road, re- ' quested that the road giving access to j his house be repaired as at present it constituted a danger to traffic.—A reply is to he forwarded that the matter, is being attended to by the foreman, j The Department of Lands and Sur- I vey wrote enquiring the number of I copies of maps of thq borough that j was required by the council.—The j matter was left to deal with. i Permission was granted to the I Franklin Poultry Club to, display a I banner across King Street for several ! days prior to its forthcoming show. j In reply to his representation on the subject, it was agreed to advise Mr .T D. Sellar that the access road to bis property would be given attention at an early date.
In his monthly report the sanitary inspector intimated that there had been three cases of dysentery reported lip to April 30.—Received. The Main Hiighways Board asked to be supplied with particulars of the loan indebtedness of the council in regard to its, primary and secondary highways up to March 31, 1928.—The information is to he supplied. The Mayor referred to the fact that the Post and Telegraph Department had removed the public telephone at the railway station to Perkins’ corner and had not placed the box at the edge of the kerb. —It was decided to call on the department to effect alterations accordingly. The foreman was asked to compile a list of localities requiring post boxes.
Authority was given to the Mayor to prepare a memorial to the Governor General regarding the taking of a small area of land at the Baptist Church corner.
The sanitary inspector was asked to view an unoccupied house in Manukau Road "and to report upon its condition.
It was reported that Cr. Armstrong had been elected chairman of the Waterworks Committee and the Mayor the chairman of the Works and the Finance Committees.
Cr. Miller was'elected to the Works and the Waterworks committees. Cr. Rae tendered his resignation from the Works Committee. The Waterworks Committee was instructed to report upon the centrifugal pump and the duplication of mains at Hickey’s.
The appointing of a caretaker for the public conveniences in Roulston Street and the Domain was referred to the Sanitary Committee.
