RAILWAY TRAFFIC.
(To the Editor). i gj r> —i feci sure that I voice the felingse of all the members of the Papakura Chamber of Commerce in thanking; you, not only for the splendid leading article in your issue of the 17th instant regarding the duplication of the line to Papakura, but also tor j drawing the attention of the Govern- \ me nt to the tremendous decrease in ! passenger traffic during the past two 1 years. To the members of the gen- ’ oral public, who are the sufferers in \ the long run, it is appalling to see the miserable attempt that is being made | to try and check this downward tcn-
dency. The chamber has stuck to this plank in Its policy for the last three' years, but with little encouragement. One has only to,,stand on the main road between Pukokohe and Otahuhu to be convinced of the ever-increasing motor service, which is indeed so great that it s reported one company is increasing its plant to cope with thetraffic. The ‘Associated Chambers of Commerce in South Auckland hold their half-yearly conference shortly, and It is to be hoped that they will, bring pressure to beaar on the railway department regarding the duplication of the. line to Papakura: it is an opportune time to employ many of the unemployed and those who are be ing dismissed by the department at the present time. Thus the opportunity would be afforded of speeding up the fast train service to cope with the motor transport monopoly fast approaching. The chambers recognise that the railway belongs to the epople, and their voice should be listened to in such matters. —I am etc., “TRAVELLER BY TRAIN.” Papakura, May 18, 1929.
