DISASTROUS FIRE.

BLAZE AT GREYMOUTH. MUCH PROPERTY DESTROYED. (Per Press Associationj. GREYMOUTH, This Day. A fire early on Sunday morning destroyed the old wooden buildings in Richmond Quay, including a boardinghouse of 14 rooms owned by Mrs A. Johnston, a garage room used by Messrs Hayley and Co., furniture dealers, and a small stable and bach at the back of the store-room owned by Mr T. Dillon, of Kotuku. The alarm was given by a boarder, who was awakened by. the flames coming through the floor of his bedroom, and shortly afterwards the brigade was on the scene, and com-

menced to battle with the outbreak,

which by that time had a strong hold 'in Harley’s' store room, while a stiff easterly wind fanned the flames and added to the task of the firemen. The brigade was at first, hampered by the lack of sufficient water pressure, and a steam fire engine was called into, and three leads wfefe con«;ted with the river by the aid of which the pressure was maintained, while a further two were maintained from the borough water supply. The store-room contained two tons of

1 kap.pc, 15 sewing machines, one ton ( V of oak timber, valued at £5500, and ■ two motor-cars and a motor cycle and side car, of the estimated total value of £2OOO, mostly the property of Messrs Harley and Go., who are heavy losers. One car belonged to Mr H. F. Bringezu. and it was insured for £2OO, while the motor cycle was the property of a Mr Marty. A woodwork examination had been carried out in the Technical School workshop, which was situated in front of Harley’s building, and .the work, some of which was to have been sent to the Dunedin Exhibition, was completely destroyed. The boardinghouse was insured for £4OO in the South British Office. and the Alliance Office. The proprietress will be a loser by about £7OO. Harley’s building was insured for £IOOO and the contents for £2OO in the Alliance Office, and they estimate their loss at about £ISOO. No figures are available regarding the insurance on Dillon’s building. BLAZE AT WAIPAWA. BAKEHOUSE GUTTED.
