TOWN BOARD MEETING.

LOAN PROPOSALS IN HAND

The ordinary meeting - of the Papakura Town Board was held in the board’s office on Monday evening. The

members present were Messrs. A. D. Nicholson, chairman, J. McCall, D. Weir, H. McEntee, W. C. Wood, C. Tuely, and W. Milne. In attendance were the clerk (Mr A. L. Cooper) and the foreman (Mr Jas. Morrileau).

Beach Road Drainage

A letter from Mr W. K. Francis

lodging a strong objection to water in Beach Road being turned across his section was received, members remarking that they had understood Mr Markwick to say that the section was bis, and the board could turn the water across it. The board would

not turn the water across the property without the owner’s permission.

Prince Edward Park.

An application by Mr H. E. McEntee for connection of a water service to section No. 8 of the Prince Edward Park sub-division, including the necessary extension of the main, w-as granted. An accompanying request that the formation of the footpath on the sub-division be now undertaken was referred to the foreman for an estimate, members remarking that the work 'would need to be put in hand when the money was available.

No Action.

A notification by a ratepayer requiring the board to see that a neighbour clear blackberry from bis boundary, and asking the foreman to give the matter bis attention forthwith, caused a laugh' at its peremptory tone. It was stated that the inspector did not consider the case one for action.

Water by Meter.

A request from. Mr J. M. Rowe that, as a water consumer outside the town area, he be put on meter, led to the general ruling by tlie board that all such consumers should be charged by meter! ’ _______ Progress of Loan Proposals. In connection with a letter from the Medical Officer of Health, Auckland, stressing f ihe urgent necessity for a drainage scheme for t Papakura, the clerk reported that he had replied that the board had the matter of a loan poll for drainage in hand. The clerk’s action was confirmed. The clerk stated that he had the work of mapping out the area and preparing- the estimates for the loan proposals in hand, and expected to submit the complete proposals to the next fortnightly meeting of the board. He asked what rate of interest he should allow for, and members replied that the board would probably not get loan money at less than six per cent. "

’Beautifying the Town

'AVrequest by the, Papakura Beautifying Society for permission to plant with Oriental plants the northern end of Union Street, where the footpaths are formed, connecting with Elliott Street, and* the new road from Dr, Page’s to the railway bridge, was referred to the reserves committee with power to act. A King Edward Street. A; petition from some 24 signatories regarding King Edward Street read as follows: “Having regard firstly to the' * manner in which our portion of tlie . , Town Board area, has been neglected in the matter of reading in the past, secondly to Ihe growing amount of both pedestrian and vehicular traffic' which the thoroughfare is carrying, coupled yvith the fact that the area served by the street is. fast becoming a -popular one, we ask that the street or portion of it be metalled. It is considered that the metalling of the stretch between the school buildings :r.uid Onslow Road, where a connection cmild be made with Hie already metalled streets, would prove a great asset to our town. We trust that immediate attention will be given to the work involved, in the order of prece- ; donee which it undoubtedly deserves.” ; Messrs Milne and Tuely said some- j thing badly needed to be done, the I latter adding - that the ratepayers were j rather tired of the plea of no funds. ! Cemetery Improvements. A request from Mr A. Willis for a concrete mixing board and water tap at the far end of the cemetery was referred to the Cemetery Committee. The committee arranged to inspect the cemetery'on Saturday to go into sundry matters.

Footpath Matters,

A request was received from Mrs Stevens for footpath improvement in Elliott Street. It was resolved to reply that the board considered this matter could be dealt with when, the footpath loan had been raised. Mr Chas. Rhodes wrote regarding the footpatli in front of Slack’s Buildings. It was resolved that Mr Rhodes he advised that the board intends eventually to make the footpaths 12 feel wide, and desires that verandahs to he built to correspond. Works Report. The foreman reported that during the past fortnight the screen in the intake chamber at the waterworks dam had been cleared, and the chamber cleaned out. A leak in the 7-inch main in Mr White’s paddock had been repaired. The cemetery road had been shipped and levelled, and a wooden ramp placed over the approach to Mr Widdowson’s shop. Patching had been done on the Great South Road. Hunua Road. Dominion Road and near the overhead railway bridge north. The drain pipes crossing Clarke Street at the intersection of the Great South Road had been taken up and cleaned, and cesspits and dram near the creamery, which were totally blocked, were given a good overhauling and cleaned properly. A box culvert had been put in at the intersection of King Edward Street and Union Street. An old drain near the southern boundary. Great South Road, had been lifted and a box culvert put in. The East Street south footpath had been chipped and shingle spread. Onslow Road was being treated tlie same way. A couple of loads of scoria had been put near Mr Rhind’s crossing. Great South Road, and a bad hole near Richardson’s garage had been filled in. He had received a truck of footpath shingle and found it very good.

.Vandalism.

The foreman further reported that vandalism was getting worse. The posts in Marne Road had been pulled up and one broken, a crossing had been torn up, two water-valve boxes near the railway had been jammed with large stones, and someone had tried very hard to wrench the lamp near the police station off with an iron bai. The report was adopted. The matter of vandalism was referred to the police, with a request that a strict watch be maintained to apprehend offenders. x Work Authorised. A request by Mr A. Willis for shingle 1o he put in some holes in tire Great South Road footpath to the south of Dowling’s shop was referred to the foreman for attention,. The foreman was instructed to secure- 12 yards of metal waste from Guillard’s quarry for Cole’s Crescent footpath. * The foreman was instructed to top the poplars in Queen Street, to attend to the approach- to Trentlram Road, to replace Cole’s Crescent bridge with a It. concrete pipes, and to order two trucks of Ngaruuwahia shingle for road work.

Building

/The building inspector was asked to render a quarterly report as to the progress of building in the- district, et< A copy of lh.e Health Department’s building by-laws was received and ordered to he placed on the table.

Glasgow Leases

The Glasgow lease documents were received and signed. Mr McEntee gave notice of motion that the hoard reconsider the question of appointing a works committee in lieu of tlie whole hoard as such a committee.

General

In regard lo a letter asking foi minor assistance for a proposal to include Papakura in an itinerary for suburban concerts in aid of the funds foi the Jubilee Institute for the Blind, i 1 was resolved to-advise that the project had the hoard’s sympathy. An application by Mr R. Hamilton for permission to erect a temporary motor shed, Settlement Road, was reported on hv the building inspector and approved.

A motion that quotations he obtained for all goods over £5 in value was carried.
