It is said that the recent tour of Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa netted Lady Forbes-Robertson (Gertrude Elliott) £30,000.
A good deal of perturbation was caused at a recent Gisborne wedding, when the bride failed to present herself at the church until half an hour after the time fixed for the ceremony. Post-nuptial. explanations revealed to the guests the catastrophe which had threatened to ruin the day for the bride, and also indicated the resource of the lady. Op the way to the church, it seemed, the bride had found herself afire down one side, and before the burning material could be smothered a hole had been burned right through the bridal array to the flesh. The physical pain was as nothing to the lady compared with the importance of reducing the delay as much as possible, and running into the house of a friend, she quickly stripped a large rosette of ribbon from the other side of the frock, sitched it over the damaged area, and resumed the journey to the church. It was presumed that the damage had been done by a burning cigarette butt which by some means had found its way into the car. The lady counts herself lucky 1 not to have sustained severe injuries.
