STRANGE CASE.
QIRL'S LIFE IN DANGER. ASSASSINATION FEARED. (Received this day, 11.10 a.m.) DELHI, January 18. The case of Mumtaz Begum, a former court favourite of the Maharajah of Indore, is causing deep public interest, following on the alleged attempt to murder her, and the actual murder of her protector, while they were fleeing from Indore to Bombay. Important personages are stated to be involved in the intrigue. A report says that while the girl was in the keeping of the Maharajah of Indore she intrigued with an officer of the latter's household, and was obliged to fly. Detectives tracked them with the above result. The girl, who is recovering from her wounds, has been removed to a police hospital, and is being fed with specially prepared food. Attempts to poison her are being feared, and a strong armed guard is stationed at the hospital to prevent any possible attempts to assassinate her. A remarkable feature of the case is that the girl petitioned a magistrate for protection against her own mother, who is travelling under an armed guard to sit with her at the hospital. A commissioned officer of the Indore Mounted Police has been arrested for alleged complicity in the affair. Sensational revelations are anticipated.
