LIGHT AND WATER.
COMMITTEE'S REPORT. IMPROVEMENTS RECOMMENDED. 'The chairman of the Borough Electrical and Waterworks Committee (Or W. S. Russell), presented the committee’s report, as follows, at Monday s Borough Council meeting:— Re application for extension ol electric line in Belgium Road and Jellicoe Road. —Your committee begs to recommend that these extensions he made as soon as funds are available. In the meantime extensions in Beatty’s Road; Paerata Road and Victoria Street have been authorised and have yet. to be completed. Electricity accounts. —The commiltce also begs to recommend that as from April 1, 1923, accounts for current supplied be issued quarterly instead of monthly as at present, and that the minimum quarterly charge be 19s 6d. This will mean a large saving in the expense of collection. Re bath. —The committee recommend that the following improvements he carried out, viz: (a) One electric lamp be put in caretakers’ room and one suspended over the centre of bath; (b) spring board be provided at a cost of about £2; (c) two iron step ladders be provided for deep end of bath to cost about £1: barb wire be fixed round top of fence to prevent people climbing over; (e) that rolls of admission tickets be procured for use of caretaker. Cr Russell moved that the report be adopted. He stated that as far as the lighting line in Belgium Road, and Jellieoe Road was concerned there was not sufficient money at present to do the work. In connection with the’ collection of lighting accounts, quarterly instead of monthly, he stated that such a change would be the means of saving about £9O per annum and perhaps more. ' The improvements to the baths were carefully considered, and the committee thought they were necessary. In connection with the date of commencing to collect the lighting accounts quarterly, the Mayor asked why April 1 had been recommended. The town clerk (Mr J. F. Deane) stated that he had suggested that date for audit convenience, but after considering the matter further lie saw no reason why a commencement should not he made as from January 1. The suggestion was eventually agreed to. As far as the improvements to the baths were concerned, the Mayor pointed ouL that, the bath was never properly completed, and some of the items suggested were intended to be done in the original scheme. He thought that further facilities should be provided, such as a septic tank, the erection of washing clown sets for ladies and men, simple seats in lliedressing rooms, the filling in of the drain and the lowering of an electric light pole, while he also considered two lamps should be erected instead of the one as suggested. The report was adopted with the additions as suggested by the Mayor.
