ROAD WORKS IN FRANKLIN.

| „ : I • GGtlftiTY E&BIN£ER’S REPORT. ! The- County Engineer* (Mr J. F. S' McArthur) reported as - follows , at | Thursday’s 1 meeting of the Franklin | County Council:— j “It will be necessary at an early j date to invite tenders for the supply | of stone in different parts of the i County, to provide for the maintenance of existing metal roads. Eefo::p next winter most of the metal roads will require a considerable amount of attention, and I would £ suggest that the necessary provision p. be roq.de for this work out of the allocations of general revenue availf + able for each Riding, t, Peterson’s Bridge, Graham’s beach to Orua Bay,—The bridge known as I? Peterson’s bridge, on the Graham’s £ beach to Orua Bay, has been in a poor condition for some time, and is. f - npw unsafe for-traffic. Although the £ traffic on this road is not great, it p is essential that a new structure be \* ejected. A second cigss bridge would £ meet requirement's. The cost of this tv would me An an approximate expen- * dilure of £6o.—Left to Riding mem- * ber and Engineer to attend to. v Graham’s Beach Wharf.—The fen- + clef piles on .this - wharf have been £ broken and carried away: the - old +. ironwork" is protruding from the main + piles, and is dangerous to shipping. * It will be necessary to supply 'and * fix pew fender' pile. The cost of * this would' mean a small expenditure * only—Left to member "and [ Engineer to attend to. ► McPherson’s Bridge, Waiuku-Drury ► Road, Runciman.: —A report was made | on 'this bridge about the beginning ► of .1914 regarding the advisability of, ► providing for a new structure or ' repairing the..old one. It was decided . by the Council at that time to adopt ■ the latter' The .work was put in h hand and, completed. The bridge ever r since and up to 'the present date . has been carrying a considerable ■ amount of heav;* traffic. It is essential now, however, to effect some further renewals and repairs. If this ■ this was done the bridge would con- ' ti.nue. to be perfectly safe to carry ’ heavy traffic for a further, number of years. The' cost was estimated at about £6O. Referred to engineer and Cr. Charles to get woiiq clone. Proposed Access Road to W aivoa Falls. —-An engineering- survey has been made of this road, the total length of same being one mile 53 .chains, the steepest grade being one in. 15. The construction is estimated to cost £IOOO. The proposed road passes through, the southern and northern portions of section 24, block; 11, Opalieke S.D., owned by Messrs Pratten and Hurst. The area required to be taken from Prat-ten’s section is 1014 .acres and that from Hurst’s 3W acres. Mr Pratten has offered the land-free of cost, but requires the read to be fenced on one side. Nothing definite has been arranged with . Mr Hurst regarding his terms. The engineer submitted "plans showing the position" of road in relation to ..school road, falls . and sections through which it passes, also levels, etc., in connection with. construction work. j. H. Herrold’s Subdivision, Sec. 13 of Allot. 313, Waipipi Parish. —The dedication of the road in, this subdivision came up for consideration at last meeting’. The road has since been inspected and found tp be formed satisfactorily. I would recommend your Council to accept dedication .of saine.- ' Goulding’s’ Rpad, Pukekohe East.— The portion of this road near Messrs ■ Chitty, and Matthews is in a very ' bad state. The necessary maintenance cannot be *carried out owing to blockages in the creek which cause water to back up on the road. In my opinion it would be advisable to have- the creek cleared out and would therefore advise your Council to give the owners of property below the road in question notice to do the necessary work. —Notice is to be given property owners to clear out the creek. Glass on’s Landing, Whangamaire, Karaka. —Arrangements have been j made with Mr Edwin Glasson for j sufficient land/for a county depot or R’-dmg, for county purposes. It is proposed to have the landing sur- - -d and taken for such purposes. Construction is now being proceeded with at the landing, erecting a stone v H find .excavating and levelling off t v e* landing. When completed .provision will have been made to stack r - 1000 cubic yards of pi- 'me which it iS proposed to crush ' <-« landing instead of carting out at a cost of 2s 6d per cubic yard, ip being delivered to the lan’dir.o- by Messrs' Bray and Co. of Onehunga. •moukai- Deputation.—At last t" - +.--0- a deputation waited on your ■■ -rgarding work done near St, • Paul’s and the dangerous state of lower down the valley. ■ In ' c'-urnany ’with Cr. Healcl, I made an b-sport;oh of the matters complained;

of and it was found that the work of constructing the small bridge at St. Paul’s- including creek protection was carried ‘but in a thorough manner and at a reasonable cost. A further -expenditure .could be made to the bridge approaches. .At the pre-. sent time,-however, further funds -are j. not available to enable this, to be j done. • A deviation as. suggested- by the deputation which could have been f made to avoid the expenditure on bridge construction, etc., was quite , out of the question. The bridges complained of as being dangerous have been attended to 'and -small slips rei movqd where required. It was stated , that- the new access road lately ■ opened for traffic was in a deplorable condition. I have to state that all . culverts have been kept -open and the road kept in as good a condition as . the available funds would permit. (Continued next issue.)
