GILMOUR CUP.
AND CROQUET CUP, PAPATOETOE V. HOWICK. Advantage was taken last week of the ideal weather conditions. On Tuesday two teams went to Mt. Wellington green and played a number of friendly games on the new lawn. On Wednesday a number of Grey Lynn bowlers visited the Papatoetoe green and played off some close and interesting games, Papatoetoe winning by a small margin.
But the big day came on Thursday, when two teams of bowlers and croquet players went to Howick to play for the Gilmou'r cup and 'the croquet cup respectively. The Howick bowlijng green is a veritable beauty spot among the good greens in the district. Bowlers who have visited that green declare that the look-out from there could hardly be surpassed. Below the sea dotted with many islands lies spread out in one vast panorama as far as the eye can reaph. The people, as if to keep in harmony with the lavish luxury of nature all around, give ungrudgingly of their hospitality and leave nothing undone to make the outing a picnic in evofry sense of the word. To such a spot will they welcome teams from all clubs who would like to play a challenge round or two. Mr J. T. Gilmour, president of the Howick Club, presented a silver cup for annual competition between two teams from the Papatoetoe Bowling Club and two teams from the Howick Bowling Club. The best two out of three games during the season is to decide who holds the cup till the following season. It cannot be won outright. Two Howick teams won the first game played, one the Howick green in 1919, but Papatoeetoe won the next two, thereby proving their title to the cup for one season. Last yea'r Papatoetoe won again, the first two games going to them, and, in consequence, a third game was not played. This year the competition is more even. Both clubs have won one game. The deciding rounds will be iflayed on the Papatoetoe green on March 17.
The croquet Cup was presented by Papatoetoe sports for competition between lady members of each croquet club, to be played for at the same time as the bowling clubs play. The Howick lady players won two games out of three in 1919 and held the cup for the first season. Last year they lost to Papatoetoe ladies, 2—l, the Howick players winning on their own green. Papatoetoe croquet playojrs beat Howick for the first time on the latter’s green on Theursday. ,This gives two games out of three to the Papatoetoe Croquet Club. The bowling scores (Howick names being mentioned first) were:— First round: Till, Speechlay, Millen, dohnston, 24, v. Watson, Death, Millington, Knight 17; Bates, Waldrom, W. Reid, Gilmour, 27, v.
