On this occasion, the Brownfurly Shield, a trophy presented by Mr Joe Brown for competition between Auckland and Otago footballers, _ was at stake, and the event aroused immense enthusiasm. Each member of the respective teams —with his lady partner, of course—took part in the dancing, and both participants and onlookers (of '‘whom there was a large number) thoroughly, .enjoyed the performances. Mr Bert Duff was the judge, and he declared Auckland the winners by a fair margin of points. • - The shield was handed over, to the Auckland captain, Mr Fred Alien, who declared that Auckland would bring back the Brownfurly Shield to Dunedin next year and give Otago an opportunity to win it.
