Brilliant sfinshine prevailed tor to-day’s mid-week match with Auckland, and by 2.30 city streets were devoid of.hie, wnile the crowds m and around Carisbrook enjoyed the perlect day awaiting the start of the struggle for the coveted trophy. At noon and at 1 p.m., when offices and factories closed for lunch, workers hotly debated the fortunes of the respective sides in every phase. How would the fast ground affect the .teams)' This man Scott will be a menace! These were some of/the points raised in the discussions.
Most employers in factories, shops, and offices used their own discretion in allowing employees time off for the match, but the people who were unable to obtain official sanction to attend Carisbrook were scheming all manner of excuses. There were the inevitable
» * • I • fl grand mothers’ funerals, and. sickness at home, but for the most part, employers were: lenient jn allowing staffs to attend the game. Many employers arranged for extra time to be worked on Saturdays and in the lunch hours. Between noon and 2 p.m. it was significant that there were more cyclists and more pedestrians in the streets than usual; therefore, arrangements must have been satisfactorily completed in most instances. For those that were 1 forced to remain behind there was the radio. Beforo 12 o’clock there were big crowds at the. Carisbrook entrances, waiting to'get a good seaty. The rush for started after. 2 p.m. and traffic inspectors were there to control the flow of cars and pedestrians. Pupils of the Otago Boys’ High School and other schools in Dunedin were free in time to see the beginning of the match.
