MACARTHUR'S WORK IN JAPAN IMPRESSES CANADIAN GENERAL CRERAR
((Rec. 8 a.m.) TOKIO, -August 18. General H. D. Crerar, former commander of the Canadian Forces, who has completed a tour of two weeks in Japan, said he was most .impressed with General AlacArthur’s blueprint for democracy, but he did . not knoto to what extent it, had sunk to the roots. However, a wonderful job had been done in Japan, and the Japanese people had revealed that they were quick to take up new ideas. Changes that impressed him mast were in the Japanese police force and in the status of women. There had been a great funda- \ mental change in the social structure.
As far as women were concerned, it might weli be that this change would be the most important and have the most enduring effect. General Crerar denied that there had been any lack of interest among Canadians in Japan and the. Pacific war. Canada had been committed to fight in Europe, and all reinforcements, troops, ' and* materials went there. His visit to Japan meant that there might be even greater interest iii the future,,,
