August 16. —Dannevirke Hunt Tub (at Hastings): Lackagh Scratched. Lackngh was scratched yesterday at 2.47 p.m. for the C’roftoii Handicap at the Wellington meeting. .Useful Bracket. Lord Holland and Cinereous, who will be coupled in the Novice Handicap at Trentham on Saturday, have both been ..'.attracting attention by their recent track gallops ' and the combination may be_ made favourite. Cinereous will be ridden by W. J. Broughton. Showing Signs of Lameness. Scene raced well ■at West Coastmeetings under big'weights this season. and she was expected to .shape well in the, Levels Hack Handicap, at Washdyke on Saturday. However, the Nightly mare has been showing signs of lameness in a knee and sle may have to be eased up for a time. Her last start was at- the Reefton meeting in March, when she carried 10.4 and finished third to Copper Coin (8.5) and Renege (8.5). Ruling Moment. Tim shorter distance of the Talavera Hurdles at Trentham on Saturday will suit Ruling Moment much hetter than the mile and three-quarters last Satnr-
day/' when he- faded after looking ) dangerous .at... the, straight entrance.. ' Last -’Saturdaywas only the, second occasion on which lie had missed a place in hurdle races, and his consistent form will appeal to .place bettors. He will again be ridden by R. Heasle.v. Neville Amiss. The promising hack, Neville, vho was unlucky not to finish closer i.’ian third on the first day of the Wellington meeting, was sent out favourite on the second day, but he dropped oilt after being prominent to the straight entrance.- On cooling off it was found that he had bowed a tendon during, tne running of the Seatoun Handicap. The injury was. no doubt, responsible for his poor performance, and v. it will keep him idle for some time. ■ Bright Fox. Bright Fox jumped rather extravagantly in the Wellington Steeplechase, and lie tired a long wav from home after being the early leader. The shorter distance of the Motai Steeplechase at Trentbam on Saturday will 'suit him much better, but he may yet need more experience to be seen at his best over country. It is of interest 1o note that Mr F. J. McManemin, who is retiring after being hnndicapper to several clubs in the Auckland district over a long period, rates Bright Fox ns the best hurdler he has ever, handicapped. Two Good Performances. Valley Boy has been one of the unlucky runners at the Wellington meeting,\uid a win for him in the Winter Oats on Saturday would be popular. He lost ground through the bad smash in the Whyte Handicap on the first day. and he was badly checked five furlongs from home in the Parliamentary Handicap last Saturday Oh each occasion lie finished' very strongly and bis two placsngs were full of merit. He again has a heavy weight to carry on Saturday, but in view of his two good performances at the meeting he should be among the favourites.
