RECRUITMENT BEGINS SOON FOR AUSTRALIAN CITIZENS’ MILITARY FORCE
BRISBANE, July IG. The enlistment of 50.000 men for the new citizens’ military force would begin in July, 1948, said the Chief of the Australian General Staff, Lieuten-ant-general V. -A- Sturdee. . A complete organisation would be completed to prepare for a practical start by that time. The plans envisaged an efficient streamlined model of the prewar Militia with two divisions and an armoured brigade. Recruits for the permanent military forces, which would be one brigade of 19,000 men, would be accepted from the end of this month. Other men would be needed for subsidiary services and for a maintenance force in Japan. The first enlistments in the permanent force would be for six years. The complete brigade would be based orieinallv in Janan.
