FOUR RETIRING MEMBERS REAPPOINTED FOR SEVEN-YEAR TERM
Legislative Council
(P.A.) WELLINGTON. July 16. The reappointment of four members of the Legislative Council whose seven-year terms had elapsed was announced in the Council to-day. Those reappointed were Messrs W. Grounds - (North Auckland), J. A. Hanan (Dunedin), W. J. Rogers (Wanganui), and J. Ryall (Greymouthl. Mr W. H. Mclntyre (Buffer), speaking in the Address-inJßeply Debate, said there were two reasons for the
suggestion that the Legislative Council should be abolished. One was that the Press for many years had been putting out propaganda that the Council served no useful purpose, and the other was that the Council had not boen doing its job: Every member should, strive to regain for the Council the esteem in which it was once’ held. During the past 10 years members had allowed the Council’s influence to slip “ The work is here' if we like to apply ourselves to it, but if we just say ‘ Hear, hear,’ to ,all the legislation that comes ■ along, we cannot justify our existence,” Mr Mclntyre said.
