IMPORTANT CLAIM OF JAP. SCIENTIST IN CANCER RESEARCH

(Rec. 9 a.m.) TOKIO, July 18. A claim to have isolated the cancer virus in mammals has been made by Dr ißyojun Kinoshita, head of the pathology department of, the Osaka Imperial University. Although cancer virus has been shown in chickens and frogs, this is-the first time it has been discovered in mammals. Dr Kinoshita said the discovery of the virus in mammals might prove that cancer was hot a hereditary disease but was transmissible. The isolationof the virus would drastically accelerate the task of discovering a complete cure. If something could be done . to suppress the multiplication of . the virus in the body, the control of activities of the virus would be possible; . ' v ; - Dr Kinoshita said that so far he had succeeded in transmitting the virus among rats, but had not been able to pass the disease from rats to mice. If this were possible, contagion between human beings was feasible. With the assistance of other research workers, he had extracted fluid from cancerous rats which, when filtrated, revealed'the presence of the virus. He believed he would determine microscopically within a few days the shape of the virus. As Japan’s delegate, he attended the International Cancer Congress at Atlantic City in 1939, where he announced his discovery of liver cancer which he proved was produced by yellow butter. He has since successfully controlled this type of cancer by the use of yeast and .cereal diets;
