THE BOYD NEEL ORCHESTRA
A- large proportion of the devotees in New Zealand to music are women; it is not so often, however, that these women have the opportunity of hearing overseas artists of their own sex. But it will have with it nine women, all of whom, with the exception of one South African, are English. New Zealand is indirectly represented by Vivien Dixon, one of the violinists, who until recently lived for some years in the Dominion. This is the first occasion on'which .a complete orchestra of 20, with full equipment, has been flown across the Pacific. Since they have been in Australia,' many people have assumed that the equality of members must inevitably mean romance, but this has been denied. Violet Palmer is the only one married, and she is the deputy-leader of the orchestra and its official secretary. The others are all mainly in their late twenties or early thirties. Dr Boyd Neel, the conductor, is a bachelor. The members of the orchestra are referred to as “ ambassadors of culture.”
