SWIMMING CENTRE DISCUSSES COACHING SCHEME
That the Otago Swimming Centre is alive to its responsibilities in the educational and coaching fields of swimming was evident at a special meeting of the< centre last night, when members spent two hours discussing the policy for the improvement and teaching of swimming next season. The president, Mil’ D. F. Watson, was in the chair. The secretary, Mr E. C. Isaacs, who presented a report to the meeting on behalf of the executive, recommended that the centre should increase its numbers of active coaches. To help the centre, clubs should submit a revised list of names for inclusion on the coaching panel. The panel, which should draw up its own constitution and appoint its own chairman, should meet at regular, intervals throughout the year. Mr Isaacs urged that clubs should endeavour to interest their older members in the work of instructing beginners. Many of them had been helped by swimming, and they should give something back to the spoi t. It was' proposed that the “Learn to Swim ” campaigns, which had been successfully organised throughout the city before the war, should be introduced again during the coming season. A recommendation that the panel should enlist the interest of school teachers in the coaching and teaching of young people was approved. It was decided that the Otago Centre should award blazers in future, and that the following would be eligible to wear an Otago blazer:—(l) All senior Otago representatives; (2) All intermediate and junior Otago representatives who had won a New Zealand championship; (3) All present centre members who had served actively for three years, or may be officials at the New Zealand championship meeting; (4) All future and past centre members of five years’ standing or more./ It was suggested that the blazer should be navy blue in colour, with a gold New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association badge on the pocket over the name Otago in gold. The design of the blazer will be discussed at a later liieeting.
