CHRISTCHURCH HOLDS COMMANDING POSITION IN COLLEGES TOURNAMENT
With- wins in the boxing contest and women’s basketball this morning, Christchurch has taken the lead by two points in the tournament between the Christchurch and Dunedin Training Colleges. To win the tournament the-visitors will have to win the Rugby match at Carisbrook ,this.,afternoon. Should Dunedin win,Hhe-tournament will end in a'-draw. Yesterday Dunedin , won both hockey matches and,.the men’s indoor basketball, while Christchurch took the women’s indoor, basketball and .the debating. ' BOXING CONTEST. . The. standard of boxing j was good, and Christchurch entered .a more experienced : team to win . four of .the six bouts. Each bout was scheduled to run for three two-minute rounds. Results:—. Feather.— D. -Rowe > (Christchurch) beat R. Edmonston. (Dunedin) by a technical knock-out in the second round. The Christchurch: .boy scored heavily with deft and right punches to the head and body. - Light. —A. Jelley (Dunedin) beat M. Leslie '(Christchurchr’on 'points after an even contest.. Welter. —E.- Nightingale (Dunedin) defeated D. Whiting ■ (Christchurch) by a technical ■ knock-out in the thirdround. • Middle. —W. J. Purdon' (Christchurch) displayed superior ringcraft to win from R. Young (Dunedin) by a technical knock-out in the - second round. The > Christchurch boxer -was . the more experienced. Light-heavy. J. .Ennis - (Christchurch) knocked out L. Barry (Dunedin) at the end of the first round, • and, although the. gong saved Barry, his seconds threw in: the towel Heavy.— A.' P. Mullins (Christchurch) gained .a points decision overJ. McAleese (Dunedin) after an even contest. , ' WOMEN’S BASKETBALL. Christchurch showed better all-round ability to defeat Dunedin easily, 26-9, in the. women’s basketball played at Logan Park. Dunedin could not penetrate: the Christchurch defence line, the visitors’ centres l revealed brilliant anticipation. The Christchurch shooting was particularly accurate, and C. Mcßabb found-the goal with delight-,, ful ease in the second, half. Misses L. Henderson and P. Meldrum were always prominent for the visitors. Certainty of. handling and passing clinched the issue for Christchurch in the second spell. Miss J.Young was the referee. V INDOOR BASKETBALL. Moving around the court with speed and anticipation, Christchurch loft the Dunedin defence standing iu : the women’s indoor basketball , match to win by 23 goals to 9. C. Mcßabb threw five goals and A. Crotty four goals arid one penalty "for the visitors. ..Miss N. Hanlin was the umpire. The Dunedin team were clearly superior in the men’s game, and D. Wiffen and I. Colquhoun combined-well in th® forward line to pile up points. Dunedin won by 57 points to 34. L. Barry defended strongly to break up Christchurch attacks. Colquhoun scored 12 field goals and, Wiffen threw nine goals. For Christchurch E. Warr scored 5 goals and one penalty. Messrs ' T: Allan and J. McCoy Were the umpires. DEBATING CONTEST. Christchurch won the debating contest by'a narrow margin. There were three speakers in each Team, and the / discussion, on 1 Competition Is Essential To Economic Success,’was expertly conducted. Mr I. G,. •Clarke was judged to be the best speaker.
