FILM STARS WITH WORST HAIRDOS IN AMERICA
Monseur Louis, tile hair stylist who originated the feather cut, page boy and the pompadour, has named the 10 worst hairdos in ■ America.. They belong, declared lie, to Ingrid Bergman, the Duchess of Windsor, Betty Grable, Tallulah Bankhead, .Doris Duke Cromwell, Lily Pons, Lynn Fontanne, Patty Berg, Edna Ferber, and Mrs George Washington Cavanaugh.. He thinks all 10 should take another look in the mirror. “It’s a pity,” he-sighed. “Ingrid is a victim of Hollywood’s vapid approach to hair styling. Her hairdressers, they are ignoring her personality.” 1 What’s wrong with the Duchess of Windsor? Louis says it’s her centre part. “ She has a. square chin, and what does she do? She parts her hair in the middle, and slicks it back severely. Her face, it looks like a little box.” . The thought of Betty Grable’s hair made Louis frown with professional distaste. He invented the pompadour, but not for, her. And her evening upsweep increases his blood pressure. “ Those big sausages—rolled curls to laymen—they would look better in a delicatessen,” he shouted. “ She has a bad nose. Why does she draw attention to it? ” Only a young girl can wear curls round the face. On a woman no longer yOung, curlicues add lines and wrinkles. Though unflinching in his criticism, Louis can also praise. The perfect hairdos in the country, he believes, belong to Norma Shearer, Claudette Colbert, and Lucille Ball. “They fix their hair to suit their personalities, ’ said Louis, with a pleased look. “ They are sensible, well-groomed women.” EASTERN EUROPEAN WOMEN ENTER BRITISH WOOL INDUSTRY “A party of Lithuanian and Ukrainian women began work this week at a;woollen mill in Halifax,” writes the New Zealand Wool Board’s Yorkshire correspondent. They are the first European displaced persons to enter the Yorkshire wool textile industry under arrangements sponsored by the authorities. They have been recruited from a displaced persons’ camp near Stamford Bridge, and the hope of the industry is that they will be followed by further large numbers. The present plan provides allocation for some 2,000 displaced women workers to enter the Yorkshire textile mills, although the industry is capable of absorbing several thousands more than this number. Before it reached the labour force regarded as essential for future demand, upon its production, the wool textile industry of Britain was officially estimated to need at least another 25,000 workers of all kinds—weavers, spinners, warpers, doffer;?, twisters, burlers, perchers, folders, strong box minders, comb minders, and many others. A big labour recruitment drive was in progress, and the employment of displaced persons was only one of a number of steps being taken to increase the labour force. Arrangements under which the continental workers are to be employed have been. ! agreed with the wool textile trade , unions. -
