Thompson (Nelson). ■ .‘ Forty years’ service in the New Zealand Police Force came to an ehd on : Monday with the retirement of Chiefdetective P. J. Doyle, of Wellington. Chief-detective Doyle began his police service at England, then served with the Imperial forces in the South African War. Be joined the New Zealand s Police Force "at Wellington, was later transferred to Auckland,, and then to Hamilton police district, where he'was in charge of: the Te Awamutu sub-district. He was transferred to: the detective branch, in which position he worked on the Mareo case. He was stationed 1 in Dunedin for some time. Later he returned to Wellington to undertake special war • work,, and remained in that-post Until his retirement. - The !Rev. W. G. Slade and Mr G. S. Gapper, president and vice-president respectively of the conference, of the Methodist Church of New Zealand..and the Rev. G. A. Laurenson, general superintendent of the home missions department, of the Church, who are .leaving from Auckland at the end of this month to attend a world conference of Methodism to.be held at Springfield. Massasobusetts, from; September 24 to October 1. were entertained last evening by representatives of the church. Congratulations on.their appointment'* as delegates were extended by the Mayor, Mr Cameron, himself , a former vice-president of the confer-: ence, Mr R. Galbraith, president of the Dunedin Preachers’ Association, and the Rev. D. Hickman, representing the ministers. The other member of the delegation to the-conference is Mr A. E.
