IN THE LITTLE RED SCHOOL HOUSE.—More Russians, better physically and better educated, is one of the aims of the Soviet Government. To this end an enormous sum has been appropriated for the current five-year period. The pi an provides for maternity leave with pay, thousands of new maternity homes, mother and infant welfare centres, nurseries, milk kitchens, kindergartens, and sanitoriums for mothers. No less than £5,000,000,000 has been allocated for this purpose. The Government has instituted special decorations for prolific mothers, which include the Order of Mother’s Glory, the Medal of Motherhood, and the title of “Heroine Mother,” the last-named being the highest honour. These children are taking exercise at a kindergarten run by the Government.
