CANADIAN SUPPORT FOR OLYMPIC GAMES AFFECTED BY OFFICIAL VIEW

(Rec. 8 a.m.) OTTAWA, May 15. Stating that he found the public’s attitude towards the Olympic officials disturbing, and pointing out that the Government planned to grant 17 } 500 dollars to the Olympic Games and that a further 100,000 dollars would be sought from the Canadian public,’ the Mayor of Ottawa, Mr Stanley Lewis, sent a letter to the Prime Minister, Mr Mackenzie King, urging a Government investigation of “ the Olympic Games set-up in Canada.” "Referring to the recent furore over the motor car which citizens presented to Barbara Ann Scott, the world champion figure skater, and which she returned in order to retain her eligibility in the Olympic Games but which would not have endangered her eligibility for any other amateur championships, the Mayor said he had received numerous protests in letters and telegrams, indicating grave public dissatisfaction with the attitude of Olympic officials. The Mayor expressed the opinion that unless the Olympic officials cleared themselves of the general impression that they were more concerned in their own particular affairs than with securing Olympic honours for Canada they would find it difficult to get monetary support from the Canadian public.
