GREEK GOVERNMENT DEFERS ACTION AGAINST COMMUNIST PARTY
(Rec. 9 a.m.) LONDON, May 16. The Athens correspondent of ‘ The Times ' says it was announced in the Greek Parliament last night that a motion tabled by 21 Populist and National Liberal deputies to outlaw the Greek Communist Party had been indefinitely postponed. The signatories had presented the motion against the instructions of their party leaders, and the Government finally persuaded them that a debate oh the subject would be inopportune. It is known that the Communist Party is directing the present guerrilla warfare, but the Government’s attitude is that, if outlawed, the Communists would be driven underground, and they would be even more difficult to combat. It was also realised that certain sections of public opinion in Britain and America would misunderstand the outlawing of a political party.
