EGYPTIAN HOPES OF TREATY APPEASEMENT DEALT DEATH BLOW BY MR BEVIN

Mav 16Egyptians now believe that they are committed to taking the AngloEgyptian treaty problem to the Security Council, says Reuter’s Cairo correspondent, reporting on reaction to Mr Bevin’s statement in the House of Commons that Britain would not attempt to appease Egypt at the expense of the Sudan. ■ ' Influential Egyptians believe Mr Bevin dealt a death blow > to their hopes for some gesture which would make it possible to reopen treaty negotiations. < Mr Bevin said that he offered Egypt a. just settlement, but he had never attempted to buy a settlement. “We have gone as far as we can.” he said. “ Egypt can take it to the Security Council or anywhere else.' 1 ; • -
