JAPANESE WHALERS TAKE MORE MEAT THAN OIL

CANBERRA, May 15. The Japanese expedition to the Antarctic early this year killed 490 whales. An American observer, Mr K. J. Coonen, who was with the expedition, says that the Japanese were not interested in whale oil, which they knew would be' transferred -to the Allied Food Council. In 72 days ,of whaling they collected 3,700 tons of oil. Their catch of salted blubber and meat for Ja'pan, however, was ,10,618 tons. Mr Coonan’s report gives details of w-aste of oil-bearing material and infringement of the whaling regulations. He says that the mother ship of the expedition, the Heshidate Maru, is suitable only for small operations, and the fleet' should be restricted to' three instead of six catcher boats.
